Reason why i should go to college? It’s easier than you think

When the economy is bad, with unemployment at its peak, many people think this is the reason why i should go to college and wonder if they can. The answer depends on your interest, aptitudes, academic qualifications, and financial situation. Taken together, these considerations may suggest that you attend either a four year college, a junior college or a vocational one.

Four year degree colleges generally offer a bachelors degree in science or arts, a BS, or a BA. On the science side, the subjects offered are the traditional ones, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, engineering, computer science, and mathematics. Humanities, art, literature, drama, languages, music and philosophy  comprise the arts. Social science, such as psychology, sociology or anthropology may come under either science or arts, depending on the emphasis. If you’ve shown an aptitude in any of these, and you have a GED or a high school diploma with an average grade of C or higher, you may have your reason “why I should go to college”. These colleges are also the ones that have the highest tuition fees. If you’re unemployed and haven’t much savings, you may still be able to pay the cost of a four year degree through grants, loans, scholarships and work-study programs. Many people have worked their way through college on a part time job.

You can still get into college if a four year college is too expensive now. Many people who are interested in a four year degree, but are simply unable to afford the expense, will opt to go to a Junior College for the first two years of a four year degree. These institutions offer two year degrees, associate degrees, in science and arts, an AS or AA degree. They cover the same general courses in your major study as a four year college, and most four year colleges and universities accept the credits you earn there, applying these to your four year program. Junior college entrance requirements are generally less strict than four year institutions, and some charge nothing or a significant amount less for tuition than the traditional four year colleges.

Not interested in the traditional academic fare? Interested in something targeted to prepare you for a career that doesn’t require a BA, BS, AS or AA, but instead of these, a certificate? Get into college at the junior level. Most junior colleges and many senior colleges offer certificates for vocational training in such fields as computer programming, office management, medical assistance, even automotive repair. The programs can last from six months to two years, but at the end, you’ll have a certificate or degree that will open the door to new employment and a new career. The cost will be about the same as that for a student attending junior college with an intention to go on to a senior one, but you’ll be recovering your expense years earlier than someone who goes on to finish the last two years. Most junior colleges are able to provide you with financial aid.

You can also get into college if you’re looking for one totally emphasizing vocational training. Vocational colleges offer certificate studies in the same areas as many junior colleges, in computer programming, computer repair, automotive engineering, office management, legal aid – in nearly every vocation there is. These institutions are not hard to get into, but they may charge as much as a four year institution. Most, however, will cost less than a four year college and more than a junior college. Some vocational colleges provide financial aid, depending on their accreditation.

Whether a four year college, a junior college, or a vocational college, if you’re looking for a new career in this tumultuous economy, you can get into college if you have the interest, aptitude, academic qualifications and some means of paying your tuition. Look up colleges on the Internet and see if there are grants or scholarships among the thousands out there that is right for you!
